The use of alcohol in mouthwash does not contribute to any therapeutic effect as it is mainly used as a solvent. In this study, we analysed samples of commercially available mouthwashes in Karachi, Pakistan and tested for the presence of alcohol in them. It is worth noting that many of the mouthwashes claiming to be alcohol free were found to contain alcohol. The paper discusses the health implications of using alcohol based mouthwashes and the long term possibility of increased susceptibility of developing cancer.
